New Control Strategy for Optimum use of Regenerative Braking Energy in Electric Train based on Energy Storage Systems

A novel energy management strategy based on the energy storage system in series with DC side of electric train inverter is proposed in this paper. Using the energy storage system causes the increase of the right side voltage of electric train inverter, consequently, the motor torque is improved as the train brakes at high speeds. Also, this control strategy increases motor acceleration during the normal operation. In this method, the electric double layer capacitor instead of the battery is used to increase the voltage because of its fast dynamic cycles and higher power density. In addition, the residual energy of braking in the normal operation mode is also used by other trains. In this case, field oriented control (FOC) strategy is used to traction motors control. By employing the proposed method, the braking energy that has a high amount in the metropolitans can be used effectively. The simulations are done by the MATLAB/Simulink@. The results validate the effectiveness of this control strategy.
