Adaptive cross-layer QoS framework for multimedia traffic in heterogeneous UMTS/WLAN networks

Achieving acceptable level of QoS cross-layer provisioning for multimedia services in integrated heterogeneous UMTS/WLAN networks is from significant importance. In this paper, an adaptive QoS cross-layer module that provides the best QoS and lower cost for any given multimedia service (by using one or more wireless interfaces at a given time) is presented. The performance of the adaptive QoS cross-layer algorithm is evaluated using simulation with dual-mode UMTS/WLAN mobile stations with cross-layer communication within. The analysis of our framework has shown overall superior performances and QoS provisioning for different multimedia services in a variety of network conditions.
