The mechanisms of particle capture in gas filters

Abstract The results of tests on the efficiency of aerosol filtration using model filters of known geometry are presented. The sodium flame method is used to determine the filtration efficiency, a spinning top aerosol generator being incorporated to provide monodispersed particles of sodium chloride. The model filters are constructed from a series of grids of parallel wires. A theory based on the Happel cellular flow model is described which predicts the inertial efficiency in packed filters. The results in the inertial region of filtration are compared with existing theories.
