The FEA model of the 3-axis double-column machine tool is built using FEA method. According to the practical machining process, the static stiffness of the machine tool is defined, and the dynamic and static characteristic is investigated. Using the part rigid method, the contribution of various assemblies to the whole stiffness is obtained. The deformation under the gravity and cutting force is analyzed in detail. The influence of the thickness of the plate, the crossbeam structure, the spindle length out of the headstock and the location of the headstock is also studied. The theory proposed in this paper would be useful for the structural optimization and development of such kind of double-column machine tool.
