Huelva Front and Malaga, Spain, eddy chain as defined by satellite and oceanographic data

By a combination of multi-spectral, remotely sensed data, visual observations from manned spacecraft, and ocean data gathered by ship and aircraft, the oceanography off southwest Spain has been determined as never before (Fig. 13). A strong ocean front has been defined and named (Huelva Front), a large (80×180 n miles), shallow eddy has been recognized (Tarif Eddy) (Fig. 14), and an eddy chain has been identified. Because of the interrelationship of these features, information on the life history, origin, and physical characteristics of the fronts and eddies is not only of academic interest, but also of direct value to fisheries and other marine activities.
