Linkadaptation isa critical component ofIEEE 802.11 systems. Inthis paper, weanalytically modelaretransmis- sionbasedAutoRateFallback (ARF)linkadaptation algorithm. Bothpacket collisions andpacket corruptions aremodeledwith thealgorithm. Themodels canprovide insights into thedynamics ofthelinkadaptation algorithms andconfiguration ofalgorithms parameters. Itisalsoobserved thatwhenthecompeting number ofstations ishigh, packetcollisions canlargely affected the performance ofARFandmakeARFoperate withthelowest date rate, evenwhennopacket corruption occur. Thisisincontrast totheexisting assumption thatpacket collision will notaffect the correct operation ofARF andcanbeignored intheevaluation ofARF.Theworkpresented inthis papercanprovide guidelines onconfiguring thelinkadaptation algorithms anddesigning new linkadaptation algorithms forfuture highspeed802.11 systems.
