A knowledge engineering training program

Tasked with supporting a worldwide communications network and its user community, the Network Control Center at Federal Express Corporation faces many challenges. To help cope with these challenges, a system was developed that provides expert system diagnostic aid and access to online documentation, graphics, and the mainframe system. For a variety of reasons, including the desire to have intradepartmental support, it was decided to have selected personnel from within the user department participate in an apprenticeship training program administered by the systems development AI group. The authors discuss various aspects of the apprenticeship training program and include views and opinions of one of the apprentices currently active in the program and of the development staff administering the development and training effort.<<ETX>>
