Future of nuclear energy worldwide strategies and policies

Nuclear energy alone is not a solution, but it is likely in the near future to have an increasing role as part of the global energy mix. Energy diversity and energy security, carbon emissions and environmental concerns and strong performance record of existing nuclear power plants are the main reasons for renewed interest in nuclear power. But for nuclear power to continue to be viable as source of energy, a number of issues will ultimately influence the development of nuclear power generation over the coming years. These include; nuclear safety, nuclear security, management of spent fuel, nuclear non proliferation, technological innovation, infrastructure needs and public perceptions. It is clear that nuclear power can bring significant long term benefits in terms of increased access to energy and security of energy supply but these benefits can not be obtained without a significant commitment to establish a sustainable infrastructure.
