Cross layer optimization - an equivalence class approach

A cross layer design method is presented which is built upon the idea of equivalence classes of key-parameters of several layers in the protocol stack. An equivalence class is composed of all key-parameter tuples which fulfill a desired quality of service. Since different parameter tuples are usually associated with different costs (e.g. transmit power), a cross-layer design can select the most cost-efficient parameter tuple
