Reading Comprehension for Braille Readers: An Empirical Framework for Research

Abstract The purpose of this chapter was to examine literature on braille reading comprehension to identify instructional strategies used to increase reading comprehension. Only 12 studies met inclusion criteria, highlighting a void in the literature. Three small groups of literature emerged examining (a) factors affecting braille reading comprehension, (b) comparisons between students reading braille and students with normal vision reading print, and (c) instructional strategies to increase braille reading comprehension. These studies were situated in an existing model of reading comprehension to describe the status of reading research for braille readers and provide direction for future research.
