An opportunistic-bit transmission scheme with enhanced spectral efficiency

This work is motivated by the need for the fundamental increase of spectral efficiency with the transmissions on the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). We define a bit-unit (BU) that is conceptually similar to an IP packet that contains sufficient information for its destination to identify the address and interpret the contents. Armed with these functions, each BU is divided into two parts, which are defined as the opportunistic bit (OB) and the conventional bit (CB), respectively. By performing mapping and recombining among different OBs and CBs, partial bits can be economized and not injected into the transmission. In addition, the probability of failed mapping and the spectral efficiency gain are derived in closed form. As the numerical results demonstrate, the proposed scheme attains enhanced performance.
