Rateless Code-Based Unequal Loss Protection for Layer-Coded Media Delivery

Layered media delivery, such as multiview video coding (MVC) or scalable video coding (SVC), provides new opportunities for mobile multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called unequal loss protection (ULP)-Strider based on Strider codes [1], which provides extra protection for layered media delivery. ULP-Strider introduces minimum distance transmission (MDT) in symbol level and soft hint for transmission to improve the probability of decoding process. We implement the algorithm in MATLAB with a four-node topology. The result shows that ULP-Strider can provide extra protection and remove 14 % time cost for recovering first-layer content in the scenes of low SNR, while our approach also has better first-layer protection than Strider’s codes in high SNR.
