Custom power technology in distribution systems: an overview

Against a background of increased use of microprocessor based systems and complex electronic devices, power quality and reliability is becoming a topic of growing concern. This paper has attempted to provide a general overview of these major aspects. The improved co-ordination and control of power flow coupled with a reduction of disturbances is required in order to meet the new demands. This is only realistically possible with solid state devices and employing real time supervisory control systems. The application of these custom power solutions will go along way to preventing many of the disturbances hindering production. Predictions suggest the newer technology will introduce a much faster response with rapid control of network characteristics. Although in it's infancy, commercial development is anticipated in the very near future. However, there stills needs to be clear evidence of secure operation, with adequate fail-safe measures built in, before users show full confidence in this new technology.
