ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROHITS: THE PRODUCTION-ORIENTED HULL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SYSTEM FOR SHIP DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

This paper briefly describes practical experiences with the STEERBEAR-Hull system, and the Production-oriented Hull Information Technology System (PROHITS) which has been developed based on the technical standards in a Korean shipyard. Since the STEERBEAR-Hull system was installed in December 1989, a number of applications have been developed to support improvement in productivity in workshops and to promote efficiency at the design stage. The paper introduces the possibility of achieving greater design time savings by modifying the organization and by promoting the multi-technique design (detail, fabrication and cutting design) for one designer. For the purpose of promoting efficiency at the design and production stage, the paper introduces the new development of an expert system for hull detail design.
