Much of finance theory has been dominated in the past thirty years by the success of simple stochastic (continuous-time diffusion) models in giving clean and tractable solutions to the problems of optimal investment and option pricing. In particular, the work of Merton, Black and Scholes has had enormous appeal for mathematicians and physicists with training in stochastic processes and differential equations.
