What Is Not Fair with Investigations

The dominance of 'fair testing' in school science investigations is challenged. The inherent characteristics of different kinds of investigations are described. Six different kinds of investigations are: classifying and identifying; fair testing; pattern seeking; exploring; investigating models; and making things or developing systems. A typical set of investigations is analysed, highlighting the dominance of fair-testing and the under-emphasis of other important kinds of investigations.
