TRANSVERSE STABILITY OF SHIPS IN WAVES IN CONSIDERATION OF SHIP GENERATED WAVES

The righting moment of a ship in waves is computed with the consideration of the incident and diffracted waves around the ship, and the steady waves due to the ship advancing at a constant speed. The three-dimensional panel method is employed for the wave field and the righting moment computation. The influence of wave length, heading, frequency and amplitude of the incident wave as well as the effects of the ship's forward speed and the ship motion are studies. It has been found that the righting moment of a ship in waves is related to all these factors. It cannot be adequate if the righting moment is only computed in calm water or with the consideration of the incident waves. Results for various conditions are presented and discussed.
