The effective stress FEM was used to simulate the shaking table model test on pipelines buried in saturated sand foundation. This method was based on the generalized Biot's equation. The hyperbolic relationship between stress and strain was used in the numerical model and pore pressure due to earthquake load was calculated from pore pressure model developed by Seed et al.The calculated excess pore water pressure response, behaviors of soil foundation and the effectiveness of different types of drainage measures were compared with the results of test.It shows that the effective stress FEM can be effectively used to simulated the process of build-up and dissipation of pore pressure in foundation around the pipelines and can be used to evaluate the capability of pipeline against uplifting. The safety of pipeline against uplifting can be improved by adopting drainage measures.
