User Studies in the Humanities: A Survey and a Proposal.

User studies in science and technology have been conducted for over twenty years,1-8 and during the last decade there has been a growing interest in social scientists as information users.4-7 However, humanities have largely been overlooked. Yet, frequently one hears the comment that humanists use the library to a greater extent than do researchers in other fields.8 The statement is also made and occasionally questioned9 that workers in humanistic research use methods and have informa-
