FBG Magnetostrictive Composite Flux Sensor Response Characterisation for Surface Permanent Magnet Rotor Flux Monitoring

In-situ magnetic flux sensing in electric machinery can provide attractive opportunities for condition monitoring of the permanent magnet material that is key to enabling machine operation. This paper reports a response characterisation study of a fibre optic magnetostrictive composite flux sensor design when exposed to different orientation excitation from the permanent magnet machine rotor field. The underlying aim is to evaluate the monitoring potential of this technology to enable minimally invasive, axially oriented flux sensing in permanent magnet rotating machinery.
