Bubble Plume Oscillations in Viscous Fluids

The mixing potential of bubble column reactors in viscous fluids was investigated by an experimental approach. A heterogeneously aerated pseudo-2D column was used to get further knowledge about hydrodynamics and especially low frequency oscillation. Different metrological methods like PIV, shadowgraphy, pressure and oxygen sensors were applied. Water as well as fluids with lower surface tension and higher viscosities, but still with rheological Newtonian behavior, were used. The considered viscosity range was between 1 mPa.s and 100 mPa.s in order to mimic bioreactor fluids. Two different spargers were employed to produce different bubble sizes and shapes. Injection flow rate was modified as well to create large spectra of injection conditions.Different oscillating behaviors are presented depending on spargers and fluid properties.
