Predicting the Evacuation Capability of Mobility-Impaired Occupants

Evacuation models have generally failed to provide adequate mechanisms for predicting the evacuation capability of mobility-impaired occupants, particularly with regards to predicting the effects of different escape route designs on such occupants' evacuation performance. This paper briefly reviews empiric evacuation models and presents a new procedure for predicting the evacuation capability of mobility-impaired occupants. Predictions that result from our procedure are compared to recorded times from observed hotel evacuations.
