Knowledge Activation in Text Comprehension and Problem Solving, Psychology of

Successful comprehension of text and the ability to solve problems requires individuals to have easy and quick access to vast amounts of information contained in long-term memory. This section discusses current bottom-up models of just the knowledge activation component of text comprehension and problem solving processes. The primary assumption is that most relevant knowledge becomes readily available through fast-acting, passive processes. In this way, large amounts of information become available without the need for slow active search mechanisms. A brief review of the history leading to the development of these models is presented as well as current findings that support these models.
