The technical potential of perennial energy crops in Poland.

The objective of this research was to characterise the technical potential of agricultural land that can be used to cultivate perennial crops for renewable energy purposes in Poland. For this activity a GIS-based model to calculate the potential cultivation area for fast growing species was developed. To complete the spatial analyses the following cartographic data were used: agricultural soil suitability map at scale 1:100,000, Corine Land Cover (CLC, res. 100 m), digital elevation model (res. 40 m), hydrogeological map at scale 1:300,000, map of annual rainfall based on the Agroclimate Model of Poland, and maps of protected areas. The areas suitable for the location of energy crops were mapped based on four assumed scenarios. The results of the analyses were maps for the potential suitable area for bioenergy crops cultivation, which considered: 1) habitat (agricultural soil suitability), 2) the availability of ground water, 3) rainfall and 4) protected areas for which the establishment of plantations for energy crops is not recommended. The results showed that after taking into account all the set of restrictions on the energy crops cultivation, the available area in Poland for perennial energy crops amounts around 1.59 million hectares.
