Advanced GaAs MMICs for phased array T/R modules

Phased array radars utilising GaAs MMICs as the active elements are seen as the way forward for a wide range of radar functions. The successful implementation of these radars depends, of course, on the GaAs circuits being technically satisfactory but probably more importantly on being able to achieve the function at affordable prices. A radar with 10000 modules, each costing over Pounds 1000, is unlikely to achieve large sale! The paper reviews some of the issues leading to genuinely cost effective modules.
