Computerized Behavioral Assessment and the Problem-Oriented Record

Concerns about the quality of present mental health services have precipitated increasing utilization of problem-oriented recordkeeping procedures. The conversion of traditional record-keeping procedures to the problemoriented format has been hindered by definitional difficulties in problem formulation (Fowler & Longabaugh, 1975; McLean & Miles, 1974). These difficulties in problem formulation can be traced to the incompatibility between a diagnostic model of assessment and the objective of the problemoriented record (POR). A comprehensive behavioral-assessment approach to problem formulation represents an alternative that is compatible with problem-oriented procedures. In this paper we shall consider the theoretical and practical differences between the diagnostic and behavioral models of assessment and present a comprehensive behavioral-assessment model that we have found useful in the
