Real-Time Transient Stability Simulation of Confederated Transmission-Distribution Power Grids With More Than 100,000 Nodes

This paper reveals recent efforts to push the limits of real-time simulation tools to model confederated transmission and distribution (T&D) systems. Since no accessible standard T&D system benchmarks exist, the available IEEE standard transmission and distribution test cases are stitched together to synthesize a new test case which has over 108,000 nodes. The real-time simulation of such a massive power gird exploits nine CPU cores on which the computations are dispatched in parallel. The experimental results verify the performance and scalability of the synthetic system and the simulation engine.
