GLYCOLIPIDS FROM SPONGES. I: GLYCOSYL CERAMIDE COMPOSITION OF THE MARINE SPONGE AGELAS CLATHRODES

The marine sponge Agelas clathrodes was analyzed for gly-cosphingolipids, and four cerebrosides (1a-4a) were isolated, each as a mixture of homologs. The structure of the new glycosphingolipid 1a was elucidated by extensive NMR studies of its peracetate and by chemical analysis. The presence of unusual α-glycosphingolipids in sponges of the genus Agelas was confirmed.
