Probabilistic empirical model for train-induced vibrations

A novel model for predicting railway-induced vibrations nuisance and structure-borne noise in nearby dwellings exposed to railway-traffic is described in this paper. The model is based on partitioning the transmission path from the railway to a building into different steps through the track system, ground, foundation and building – each characterised by a probabilistic approach towards adding frequency response functions obtained by statistical analysis of measurements obtained at various locations passed by the most common train types. The model output consists of an estimate of the acceleration level at a particular building floor, an estimate of the associated error and an estimate of the structure-borne noise level.
