A semi-passive WDM optical network with multiple protections of distribution fiber and three-dimensional expansion

A highly reliable semi-passive WDM optical network is proposed in this paper. By newly designing passive array scheme in remote node, the network can support ring, grid and three-dimension topologies of optical network units (ONUs). By using optical switches and connecting fibers between the adjacent ONUs, the network can achieve 1:N (N ≥ 2) protection of distribution fiber. By setting a backup fiber, 1 + 1 feeder fiber protection can be realized. By adding optical transceivers in optical line terminals and changing the topology of ONUs, the network can be expanded from two-dimension to three-dimension structure. In addition, it can achieve dynamic bandwidth allocation among the adjacent ONUs.
