THERE are several reports in the literature dealing with the effect of surgical operations on liver function. The available material was recently reviewed.1 , 2 Most workers report changes in a high proportion of patients after surgery under general or spinal anesthesia. The hippuric acid test was used in several cases but has been criticized on theoretical grounds.
