Prototype Fabrication and Testing of a Modified MA-2 Harness.

Abstract : There has been concern by the U.S. Navy over the fact that many pilots have received fatal injuries in what are termed as 'Survivable Crashes'. The problem appears to stem from the excessive amount of dynamic overshoot and rebound associated with existing pilot restraint systems. Dynamic analysis of restraint systems in crash situations has shown that a rigid restraint system is desired if 'dynamic overshoot' is to be eliminated. In a previous study, a rigid restraint system was designed and subjected to a series of dynamic tests. Results of the test showed an improvement in crew member survivability with a rigid restraint system but improvement was needed. In the present program low elongation harness materials were obtained and incorporated into the MA-2 integral restraint and parachute harness. The test results are discussed.
