Device Detection and Driver Provisioning Mechanism for Small Devices

This paper addresses automatic device detection and driver provisioning mechanism for small devices which can be used in a wearable computer or ubiquitous healthcare. In this context, we require user distraction-free environment in using the device. To do this, we need to detect the device automatically and provide its related driver for those devices. The main point of this paper is how to detect the device automatically and how to download and install related driver from the network. So to speak, we propose hot plugging mechanism for small devices. In this paper, we propose the hierarchical driver consisting low level communication driver and high level functional driver. The low level communication driver (LLD) receives the packet from sensor device with conventional communication protocol and transmits the pure data after trimming head and tail information to high level functional driver (HLD). We devise the mechanism to support the small device such as wrist-strip and chest band type physiological sensing device in developing infrastructure of ubiquitous healthcare.
