Implementation of an internal food traceability application for local farmers in Jamaica

The lack of agricultural traceability in third world countries is an ongoing problem that affects both local distribution and international trade. Currently, Jamaican agriculture faces trade problems with the introduction of the United States Food Safety Modernization Act. This Act prohibits international trade with the United States if countries do not have a local traceability system in place. To demonstrate internal and backward food traceability a prototype software application, BreadBasket, was developed. The application was demonstrated using scotch bonnet peppers (Capsicum chinense). We were able to document trace data at the farm level as well as perform backward and internal traceability.
