ISOLATION AND SCREENING OF CELLULOLYTIC FUNGAL SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH LOWER DENOMINATION CURRENCY NOTES, CIRCULATING IN JAMMU CITY (INDIA)

Thirty seven species belonging to fifteen fungal genera were recovered from the note samples by using dilution plate method. All the recovered 37 fungal species were screened for cellulase activity. Dye staining (congo red) was performed for preliminary assay of cellulase active fungal species and twenty seven fungal species were found to be positive. Quantitative estimation of amount of cellulase produced by positive fungal species was done by using dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA) method and six of them, namely Chaetomium globosum,Trichoderma koningii, Penicillium griseofulvum, P.chrysogenum, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus niger were found to be highly cellulolytic in comparison to other positive fungal species. Their cellulase activity ranged from 0.14 to 0.73μmol/ml/min. Maximum cellulase activity was shown by C.globosum, whereas Cladosporium cladosporoides showed minimum cellulolytic activity.
