Virtual Teamwork and Commitments Impact on Project Quality

Thisarticleexamineshowcommitmentamongindividualsinvolvedinashortterm,virtualteam projects influence the quality of the project outcome. Results indicate that forced and habitual commitmenttypeshadanegativeimpactonvirtualteamprojectqualitybutfoundnoevidenceof thehypothesizedpositive influencesof affective, normativeor economic commitment.Findings suggestthatcommitmentinvirtualteams,particularlythosevirtualteamsthatengageinshortterm projects,maynotexerttheinfluenceobservedinco-locatedteamsinvolvedinlongerdurationprojects. Further,forcedandhabitualcommitmentmayactuallybedestructive.Assuch,thefindingsofthis studysuggestthatforprojectqualitytobeachieved,otherforcesmaybenecessary.
