Crack propagation in welded stiffened panels

Abstract A series of experiments was conducted to characterize the propagation of large fatigue cracks in welded stiffened panels. The stiffened panels were incorporated into large box beams loaded in four-point bending. The experiments confirmed that cracks propagate in a stable manner in redundant stiffened panels. The experiments showed the effects of welding residual stress, the presence of transverse butt welds, and stiffener details such as drain holes on the growth rate of these cracks. The type of structural steel did not have a significant effect, as expected.
