Mohamed, K. Y. Liu, W. H. Siew Introduction Design and operation of a smarter power grid is an incremental process of applying data acquisition and communication technologies to the power system thereby enabling more real-time flow of information on the network and more interaction between supply and demand. Synchro-phasor technologies using phasor measurement units (PMU) provides in depth information in real-time about the state of a power system. There is a clear requirement to continuously monitor power system in real-time in the context of power quality (PQ) due to the higher penetration of renewable and distributed generation. There is also a requirement to monitor the electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by switching so that preventive measures can be taken to protect the various electronic circuitry used for control and measurement purposes. The University has developed a high speed data acquisition system with two different time sync capability to achieve synchro-phasor, PQ and EMI measurements.
