Mohamed, K. Y. Liu, W. H. Siew Introduction  Design and operation of a smarter power grid is an incremental process of applying data acquisition and communication technologies to the power system thereby enabling more real-time flow of information on the network and more interaction between supply and demand.  Synchro-phasor technologies using phasor measurement units (PMU) provides in depth information in real-time about the state of a power system.  There is a clear requirement to continuously monitor power system in real-time in the context of power quality (PQ) due to the higher penetration of renewable and distributed generation.  There is also a requirement to monitor the electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by switching so that preventive measures can be taken to protect the various electronic circuitry used for control and measurement purposes.  The University has developed a high speed data acquisition system with two different time sync capability to achieve synchro-phasor, PQ and EMI measurements.
