Electromechanical loading of frequency selective surfaces

In this paper, we describe how electromechanical resonators such as BAW and SAW devices can be used to load FSS unit cells in order to greatly narrow the bandwidth of the resulting FSS. Unlike traditional FSS structures, this new design utilizes high Q electromechanical resonances to create high frequency selectivity and highly subwavelength unit cells, without large inductive and capacitive components. Due to their small unit cell size, these electromechanically loaded FSS structures can be practical at the UHF band and more easily conformed to complex radome and package geometries.
