Effective Delivery of Transition Assistance to Air Force Members Leaving the Service.

Abstract : This report presents the background, methodology, and results of the Logistics Management Institute's (the Institute's) study of the United States Air Force (USAF) Transition Assistance Program (TAP). The report describes the TAP, why it was initiated, and how it operates. We examine the organization, structure, and costs of the Air Force TAP and compare it to other delivery options, including Army, Navy, and Marine Corps transition programs. We also provide our findings, conclusions, and recommendations from an analysis of data collected from 84 Air Force bases, 8 major air commands (MAJCOMs), the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC), and Headquarters (HQ) USAF. This study recommends the most effective way for the Air Force to deliver transition assistance to its military members and civilian employees who are separating or retiring from active service, and to the families of these two groups.
