In the process of characterizing transcripts from genes present in the VSG gene expression site of Trypanosoma brucei (ESAGS: ref. 1), we accidentally cloned a cDNA showing high sequence homology to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae and human ribosomal L44 genes.
