A survey of genetic resistance to leukosis-sarcoma viruses in commercial stocks of chickens.

Abstract THE avian leukosis-sarcoma viruses have been subdivided into three subgroups (A, B and C) (Vogt et al., 1967). Recessive genes at each of two autosomal loci confer resistance to subgroups A and B respectively, probably by blocking viral penetration (Crittenden et al., 1967; Piraino, 1967; Crittenden, 1968). Unpublished data suggests that a similar system of resistance to subgroup C exists (Duff and Vogt, 1969; Payne, 1969). Surveys of genetic resistance to subgroups A and B in commercial strains of white-egg-producing strains suggest that most strains are highly susceptible to subgroup A, but are segregating for resistance to subgroup B (Calnek, 1968; Crittenden, 1968). The present survey was initiated to study a larger group of white-egg-producing stocks and a sample of heavy-breed stocks for resistance to subgroup A, B and C leukosis-sarcoma viruses. MATERIALS AND METHODS Virus Stocks: Purified stocks of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) were used. This virus was chosen…
