The work presented in this paper aims at contributing to the design of traffic and resource management techniques suited for integrated ATM-satellite systems with composite traffic load. The proposed techniques exploit sources statistical multiplexing and pre-emption based dynamic resource assignment. The features making the techniques suitable for ATM-satellite environments are: very low on-board processing, easy algorithm tuneability, statistical multiplexing of VBR sources, good exploitation of satellite bandwidth, and QoS provisioning to real-time and non-real-time traffic sources. The effectiveness of the proposed strategies is assessed on the Euro-SkyWay multimedia satellite platform.
