RETRACTED ARTICLE: Deciphering the role of metabolomics in plants improvement: status and outlook

The post-genomics period has verified the advancement of pioneering technologies, providing high-throughput and cost-effective methods for molecular description of a cell or organism functions. Large-scale metabolite analysis enables researchers to obtain global metabolite data sets and corresponding metabolic pathways in unprecedented way. In recent years, studies on metabolomics have focused on yield-related traits in order to improve quality of fruits and crops. Importantly, the combination of metabolomics with other approaches, for example, transcriptomics, quantitative genetics, and genetic alteration has proven its great significance for plant development. An effective integration of these modern approaches guided investigators to fish out features of useful genes and a large number of metabolites in order to highlight the candidate genes for downstream analysis and eventually provide trait specific markers to enhance commercially significant traits. This in turn will enhance the capability of plant breeders by permitting them to sort more knowledgeable decisions. In view of this, this paper summarized the important progress in the field of plant metabolomics in the past decade, and briefly discussed the present contribution and future metabolomics scope in accelerating plant development.
