The invention relates to a live line insulator string detection robot crawling mechanism, a robot and a crawling method thereof. The crawling mechanism comprises a lifting device, a first clamping device and a second clamping device, wherein the first clamping device and the second clamping device are arranged on the two sides of the lifting device and connected with the lifting device in a drive mode respectively. The lifting device is used for driving the unlocked one of first clamping device and the second clamping device to move vertically along with the lifting device in the same direction and conduct relative movement relative to the lifting device when any one of the first clamping device and the second clamping device is locked in the crawling process, wherein the relative movement direction is the same as the movement direction of the lifting device. The robot crawling mechanism and the robot are small in energy consumption, flexible and compact in structure, small in whole size and light in mass, and all components are convenient to combine.
