Spin asymmetry parameters for electron-hydrogen scattering. II. Excitation of the n=2 states

For pt.I see ibid., vol.19, no.12, p.1817 (1986). Asymmetry parameters for the scattering of spin-polarised electrons by spin-polarised hydrogen atoms are presented for the 1s to 2s and 1s to 2p transitions and for the excitation of the n=2 level in the energy range 13.6-300 eV. The calculations are based upon sophisticated pseudostate approximations published in the literature. The results for the 1s to 2s transition are rather dramatic. Although it is anticipated that the first experiments will only be able to measure the asymmetry, A12, for the excitation of the whole n=2 level, it is shown that such measurements will provide insight into the individual 2s and 2p components since A12 is dominated by the 1s to 2p excitation at forward angles and, between 15.0 and 54.4 eV, by the 1s to 2s transition at backward angles. Comparison with the calculations of McDowell et al. (1984) at 35, 54.5, 100 and 200 eV reveal similarities in structure but significant differences in detail.
