‘Utopia’ and ‘Passion’: A Commentary on ‘Sustainability and Accounting Education: The Elephant in the Classroom’

This questioning was very challenging, but gave me the chance to reflect on the nature and role of educational processes for sustainability in promoting ‘transformative change’ (Thomson and Bebbington, 2005). This Commentary represents an in progress attempt to reflect on and begin to answer these questions. The Commentary is the outcome of a ‘dialectic engagement’ and a ‘dialogical interpretation’ of Gray’s view about (accounting) education and how ‘to get the elephant into the classroom’ (Gray, 2013, p. 311). I have tried to represent my understanding of Gray’s interpretation of accounting education for sustainability (AE4S) and contribute some personal insights to the future development of AE4S.
