U.S. team places fourth in Chemistry Olympiad

The U.S. placed fourth overall among teams from 33 nations competing in the 1992 International Chemistry Olympiad, which concluded last week in Washington, D.C. The olympiad annually brings together the world's brightest high school chemistry students to test their knowledge of chemistry. Organized this year by the American Chemical Society, the event was held in the U.S. for the first time in its 24-year history. The four high school students representing the U.S. won one gold medal, two silvers, and one bronze. The top 16 of the 131 contestants received gold medals. The next 27 won silver, the following 40 got bronze, and the remaining 48 took home copper medals. The U.S. gold medal went to Swaine L. Chen of OTallon (111.) Township High School, who placed 15th.
