Characterization of Particle Swelling of Materials of Pharmaceutical Interest

A method based on the employment of an electrical sensing zone instrument (Coulter Counter) has recently been proposed for the combined measurement of the increase in particle volume (particle swelling) and granulometric characterization of pharmaceutical tablet disintegrants. The performance of the method, as far as its applicability to limited swelling materials is concerned, has been assessed. Both inert materials (polystyrene latices) and limited swelling disintegrants (maize starch and crospovidone in different granulometric fractions) were examined for total particulate volume in aqueous media. The accuracy and repeatability of measurements of both total particulate volume and particle volume increase were defined. The results obtained indicate that the method may be adapted for measuring the increase in particle volume of so-called limited swelling disintegrants.
