LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Magnetic quenching of back scattering in coupled double quantum wires: giant mobility enhancement

We show theoretically that the low-temperature mobility and conductance of thin double quantum wires formed from coupled double quantum wells can be enhanced by orders of magnitude by an applied magnetic field of a few tesla. This enhancement is caused by quenching of the intrawire back scattering which occurs when the Fermi level falls within the partial energy gap. The gap is created by the anticrossing of the energy dispersion curves of two quantum wires which are displaced relative to each other by the field.
